Dr. Art Joslin, Lead Instructor/CKM Instructor


Art Joslin is a recent graduate in Force Science Analysis from the Force Science Institute, a USCCA Certified Firearms and Emergency First Aid Fundamentals Instructor,  an NRA-appointed Training Counselor,  NRA Advanced Pistol Instructor, MCRGO Master Instructor, and a Level 4 Commando Krav Maga Instructor (Black Belt) teaching personal protection skills to hundreds of firearm instructors, LEO, Armed Security, and civilians each year. Art also certification as a Handgun Instructor by IALEFI (International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors).
A professional educator since 1978, Art brings his decades of experience in educational methodology to every class he teaches. He approaches his training courses with a high regard for competency in a nurturing environment. Art specializes in training shooters of all ages, especially women and persons who are disabled. Art has trained members of law enforcement, military, federal security, and civilians in all aspects of personal defense.
Awarded the Distinguished Expert in Pistol, and Distinguished Expert in Defensive Pistol I & II, Art has been an avid shooter for over 47 years (learning to shoot from his father; a former law enforcement officer and combat-wounded veteran of the Korean Conflict), a life-long student of the martial arts (Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Jujitsu, Hapkido, Commando Krav Maga (CKM)), and is a Level 4 CKM Instructor. He has trained in close-quarters tactics, executive protection and security, counter-ambush techniques, Intuitive Sighted Shooting techniques, Reality-based Scenario training, graduate of the MAG-40 and MAG 30 (Massad Ayoob Group), and multiple training courses in defensive pistol techniques and tactics. Art is also a Graduate of the Law of Self Defense Instructor Program (having studied under Andrew Branca) and teaches the 8-hour Michigan Lethal Force seminar which was launched in early 2016.
In 2016, Art completed the Deadly Force Instructor training course taught by Mas Ayoob of the Massad Ayoob Group and Marty Hayes of the Armed Citizen's Legal Defense Network.  Art served 22 years as a Firefighter/EMT, Fire Training Instructor, Dive Team Leader & Training Officer, and has trained at the National Fire Academy. He is an Affiliate Instructor with the Armed Citizen's Legal Defense Network, an Associate member of the Association of Defensive Shooting Instructors, NRA Benefactor Life Member, Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners, IDPA , International Association of Law Enforcement Firearm Instructors, and holds graduate degrees from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
A former university professor,  Art is a Court Officer & Deputy Sheriff (judicial enforcement) in Michigan & a Reserve Police Officer. He is an Armed Protection Officer, Executive Protection Specialist, Bouncer, and a Field Supervisor for one of the largest private security companies in Michigan with multi-state coverage.  In 2014, Art began to offer his services as an expert and consulting witness in the Dynamics of Violent Encounters, and use of force cases ( He is an affiliate member of the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan, the Pistol Director at the Howell Gun Club, and a member of the Brooklyn Sportsmen's Club.

James  Joslin, firearms/CKM Instructor



James Joslin is an NRA Pistol Instructor and co-owner of Critical Defense Training, Combat Survival of Michigan, and Wolverine Firearms.
James is a recent graduate of the Massad Ayoob Group MAG 40, MAG 30, and will be attending the MAG IC in August 2018. James is also a certified Level 3 Commando Krav Maga instructor and teaches courses in Pinckney, Dexter, and Chelsea, Michigan. He often assists Level 7 Mike Trester with CKM instruction in Ann Arbor.
James is employed as an Armed Protection Officer, Executive Protection Specialist, and armed currier.
He has trained in Tae Kwon Do, and CKM. Additional training has included AR-15, advanced pistol, close-quarters fighting, counter-ambush training, and de-escalation techniques.
His hobbies include shooting all his Father's 5.56 ammo, computer technology and training CKM.
James attends WCC for his degree in Business.

Mike Trester, Firearms/CKM Instructor



Mike Trester is a firearms instructor and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the training environment. With his over 27 years of law enforcement experience, he has served as uniform patrol, detective, Sergeant, Operations Lieutenant and Detective Lieutenant. In addition he has served on his department's Special Weapons and Tactical team for over 21 years, and is currently the Sniper Team Leader.
His ability to break down skills to a learnable level is paramount to the success of his students. Mike is a proponent of fine-tuning technique and believes in the adage "Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect."
His students have run the gamut of civilians, law enforcement, federal agents, undercover agents, and military personnel.
Mike is a Certified Level 7 Commando Krav Maga Instructor.  In 2009 Mike launched Commando Krav Maga Chelsea (now American Warriors Academy) as a Level 2 CKM Instructor. In 2015, Mike completed his Level 7 Certification under Chief Instructor, Moni Aizik. In addition to Commando Krav Maga, Mike is a 4th Dan in Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do and has trained in Judo and Choi Kwon Do.
“Anyone can teach you a technique, but you have to ask yourself:  Have they ever used it?  What is their experience?  Have they applied it outside of the classroom?  I have.
